The History behind the ''Agbadza'' dance
Agbadza is a vibrant Ewe dance from Ghana, evolved from an ancient war dance called Atrikpui, transforming into a popular social and recreational dance performed at festivals and funerals.
The Agbadza dance, along with its predecessor Atrikpui, emerged from the Ewe people’s history of war and oppression in the Volta region of Ghana and Southern Togo.
The Ewe’s used songs and dances including Atrikpui, to train and encourage their warriors.
As a period of peace arrived the 1920’s, the Ewe’s began using some of their old songs and dances, like Atrikpui for entertainment, leading to the evolution of Agbadza.
